The photo that highlighted the year! Smiling Marta (14) in a new home! (video)

Poignant photos of little Marta (14) and her family traveled across Serbia and worldwide at the end of 2021. The little girl who studied under a quilt, in an earthen house without electricity or water, had only one wish, which has just come true!

The hardships of living without basic necessities are no longer visible on the children’s faces

It is much better than it was, many more rooms, better living conditions. We have a bathroom, a kitchen, all is taken care of! The road to school is much better, it is not muddy. I don’t have to change my shoes and wear my boots anymore – little Marta shared her impressions of the new house with a cheerful voice.

Although we announced a few months ago that more than 100,000 euros had been collected for this project, the completion of the project took some time due to the search for a suitable house. The house with 36 acres of land in the village of Porodin, in the municipality of Žabari, met the family’s wishes for its youngest members to have proper conditions for psychophysical development and happier childhood. The total cost of the project is 4,764,292 dinars. The balance of funds remaining from this campaign will be directed to help vulnerable families throughout the Balkans.

Then and now

united to the very end!

A record number of donors proved once again that there are no great achievements without harmony and love. On this occasion, we would like to thank all contributors, and especially the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, Nenad Popović who ran 1,300 km for little Marta, Serbs from China, the Association of Serbian Student Philanthropists from the University of Windsor who organized a bake sale, the Foundation Register of the National Internet Domain of Serbia, as well as the participants of the humanitarian event A Book To Smile. Also, we would like to thank all benefactors who contacted the family directly and helped in various ways.

In the past, the situation was hopeless, while today, in the new house, the children have everything they need

Let’s remember Marta’s mother Danijela lost her eyesight as a child, while her father Zdravko suffered severe leg injuries. Because of this, Marta, from an early age, had to help her parents and take care of her brother Zdravko (5) and sister Zdravkica (2).

Thank you to all the good people and to the organization Serbs for Serbs for helping us get a house! – were little Marta’s parting words at the very end of our visit.

Sadness and uncertainty were replaced by smiles and a sense of peace!

Then and now

And really, there are no words to describe the last minutes spent with Marta and her family. Thousands of generous people made possible another memorable achievement, and the joy and happiness we shared with the Jovičić-Novaković family will remain etched in our hearts forever!
