In the last ten days, in the areas of Petrinja, Glina, Sisak and Kostajnica, devastating earthquakes have caused human casualties and incalculable material damage. According to the latest estimates, more than 8,000 buildings have been damaged. The damage extends to houses, buildings, churches and institutions, mostly in the centre of Petrinja.

Before the war, the majority of the region’s population was Serbian. In the last fifteen years, some of the expelled families have begun to return to their centuries-old homes. With the great efforts and difficulties that accompanied this return, numerous houses and properties were renovated. Our charity provided support to hundreds of households over the past ten years.

After the earthquake, a significant number of the returnee families once again lost everything that they had. Their homes were destroyed, and the Serbian Orthodox churches and parish homes in Petrinja and Sisak suffered significant damage. Those hardest hit now spend cold winter nights outdoors in their vehicles and in makeshift accommodations.

After consultation with the Metropolitanate of Zagreb-Ljubljana, the Eparchy of Gornji Karlovac and priests in the area, it was decided that in the coming days our charity would launch a large fundraiser to address the earthquake damage as much as possible.
